There are so many reasons why we chose to craft. After decades of creating with paper, it is a fundamental part of our life. Teri and Savannah share their deeper reasons why we create and craft. After some analyzation we realized how paper crafting impacts us in deeper ways at different stages of life. Crafting can fit into the Maslow’s hagiarchy of needs at every level.

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Explained

The theory of how our motivations and actions are influenced by these needs. How even when we progress and go up the pyramid of needs we are searching for something else. Teri and Savannah dive into how crafting fits into every layer.

The podcast episode goes into more details but for our blog we will just be focusing on the higher levels.

Not only does crafting fit into each of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, but it actually elevates and helps us push into the higher levels. Scrapbooking in particular does this because it is self-aware. We discussed in the top tiers there is a moment when you want to go back and give light back to your past experiences, how it is a moment of healing. Scrapbooking brings you closer to this moment. With scrapbooking you can chose to scrapbook moments in your life that were challenging and bring light to the situation. There are a few times of when we chose to scrapbook the good.

Savannah’s scrapbook page of high school and early college years. Faces and journaling are blurred out for identity protection.

Savannah had dated a guy for 4 years, and after the split there were a lot of cute pictures of mostly unhappy times. Initially she only saw the arguments that happened when she looked at the pictures. After revisited the printed photos a couple of years later she decided to celebrate her adorableness, and her victory over emotional abuse. So, she chose to cut out the parts the made her sad and just remember the fun and good things that happened during their time together. This scrapbook page pulls out the moments of light and pushes out the darkness. Negative memories are very powerful and sometimes override all other thoughts during rough times, recording the positive moments actually helps us heal memories of the past by boosting the good times in our mind.

Scrapbook pages can also be a moment of celebrating yourself. Teri doesn’t have many pictures of when she was little so when she discovered them, she wanted to treasure them. Who she is and what she survived is worth celebrating. We as people worth celebrating. Creating this scrapbook page is a homage from older Teri to younger Teri with a message that says we are worth being celebrated.

As hope that what stage of life you are in that scrapbooking brings light and healing into where you are right now.

This episode validates why we all craft and perhaps even enlightens us on what drives us to keep churning out handmade creations. Why do you craft?
